Firms' deletion of online critiques draws 'censorship' cries

By Bob Sullivan

The First Amendment allows American citizens to say almost anything without fear of being thrown in jail by the government. The free speech it guarantees does not, however, mean your comments are protected from being thrown off a website.?

Still, those who ?censor? consumers online quickly draw the full ire of the Web. Two years ago, when Apple launched its iPhone 4 and was caught deleting threads on its own website about a critical Consumer Reports review, the Internet's revenge was swift and brutal.?

Social media complicates the issue, as nearly all major brands have thriving interactions with consumers on Facebook and Twitter, inviting potential swarms of negative comments. Deleting such comments on third-party social media sites is a big Internet faux pas, so most companies use the language of free speech when they discuss social media, claiming they permit open discussions.? But experts say some firms do try to stuff the genie back in the bottle, quietly erasing negative comments, trying to buck Internet culture and hoping they don't get caught.

Two recent high-profile incidents of alleged "censorship" -- which both companies deny --- demonstrate the quandary companies are in, and how suspicious consumers are.

When United Airlines "lost" a 10-year-old traveling to summer camp, its Facebook page was deluged with negative commentary.? The airline was accused of deleting some comments, but it told NBC News that it doesn?t censor its page, and only removes comments that violate its terms. Around the same time, Wal-Mart deleted comments from a man who said his wife was mugged outside a store in Oakland, but Wal-Mart officials tell NBC the comments were deleted in error, and that the firm doesn't remove negative comments.

A glance at both firms' Facebook pages proves they certainly permit negative commentary there, and that consumers have quite a knack for writing it.

There is general agreement from all sides that, when it comes to social media, firms shouldn't delete negative comments about themselves and should generally act as if the First Amendment applies.? Developing that stiff an upper lip is easier said than done, however, says David Armano, social media expert at public relations giant Edelman Worldwide.? And consumers who suspect some negative comments are getting vaporized by companies aren?t necessarily off base.

"(Deletion) is definitely more common than you think," he said. "I'm not going to throw names out there, but many of our clients grapple with it. Some of them have deleted comments against what we advise."

Many organizations still haven't made the psychological leap from websites to social media, he said. Despite Apple's bulletin board woes, there is a gray area when companies choose to control what appears on their own dot.com. But erasing comments from Facebook is universally seen as a no-no by users, he said.

"A lot of organizations just really don?t understand the difference between these new social channels and what they knew as digital a few years ago until they learn the hard way," he said.? "The most common knee-jerk reaction is, 'This is our property, so we can delete.' There is a temptation to do so unless you really have been in social for a while."

Deleting comments and getting caught can be a nightmare -- and that nightmare is only one screen shot away.

Thomas Hawk thought he caught Wal-Mart deleting his comments after his wife allegedly was mugged in the parking lot of the chain's Oakland store Aug. 19.?

"Apparently, it took over 15 minutes for anyone from the Wal-Mart store to get involved and the manager did not want to call the police," he wrote. A screen grab showed his initial post on Wal-Mart?s page, and a subsequent grab documented its removal.? A second post complaining about the removal was also deleted, but that hardly ended the incident. Hawk's personal blog entry about the deletions went viral, and eventually landed on Reddit.

"I'm pretty unsatisfied actually at their response to the whole situation," Hawk told NBC News.

Wal-Mart said its policy is not to delete negative comments and that Hawk's comments were deleted erroneously by its third-party social media monitoring company. His initial comment was removed because the word "assault" triggered a profanity filter (it included the word "ass"), a company spokesperson said; his second comment was removed because it contained a hyperlink, against the firm's terms of use.

After workers noticed the error, the company reposted Hawk's initial comment two days later and apologized.

?We conducted an internal review and found that it was a system error that flagged your post as containing profanity,? the apology read. ?It should not have been deleted. It is not our policy to delete a post like yours. We are reposting your original post below. Of course, we always want to improve safety and have shared this situation with those responsible within the Wal-Mart team.?

The incident shows how prickly Internet users are about comment deletion -- there was far more discussion of the alleged censorship than of the alleged mugging.

The great risk from deletion, as shown in the Wal-Mart case, is that it often backfires.? Attempting to erase criticism often magnifies it, drawing extra attention to a consumer's comment that might otherwise have been ignored, or throwing gasoline on a fire that's just begun to burn.

"I think a lot of brands have learned the hard way that people will grab screen shots. Once it's on the ?Net, it's there forever," said Carri Bugbee, founder of Portland-based social media consultant firm Big Deal PR. ?Deleting comments can get messy too, she said. Those who respond to the initial comment might also be removed, and inevitably, an awkward ?why did you delete that?? thread gets started.

United Airlines was accused of deleting comments in the wake of the "lost" 10-year-old incident, but it flatly denied the accusation to NBC News.?

Around the same time, United passenger Sarah Liddle told NBC News that her comments were deleted from United's Facebook page after she complained about poor service.

?United pulled my entire post from their page. No response from them, nothing inappropriate in my post and nothing offensive, (and they) didn't inform me why they removed it from their page," she said. "They just pulled the post. I was furious and still am."

Liddle did not have a screen shot of her post because, she said, she didn't expect to need one.

United spokesman Joe Micucci said he couldn't comment on Liddle's post, because he hadn?t seen it, but repeated the firm's non-censorship policy.

"We do not delete comments unless they contain profanity, are hostile in nature or mention an employee?s name in full," he said.

Liddle said her post did include the name of an airline employee, potentially explaining its removal. But both Liddle and Hawk said they were annoyed that they weren't notified when their posts were removed. Doing so would be tricky and time-consuming for companies, but a simple "your post violated our terms" notice might head off accusations of censorship, and any subsequent social media firestorms that might ensue.

Armano, the Edelman social media expert, said companies need to clearly and conspicuously post their comment terms so consumers know where they stand before they post.

"We recommend (they) have clear moderation policy that sets your terms, so it?s accepted that if there?s hate speech it will be removed, and it?s clear what else is unacceptable,? he said.?

But even with that in place, critical decisions that could lead to PR disasters too often are made by junior employees, Bugbee said.

"A lot of this stuff gets delegated to people who don't have crisis management experience, who don?t understand the implications," she said. "Hopefully people know better than to delegate this stuff to interns ... but it?s soft skills that are more important. Any 14-year-old can learn how to use Facebook, but the soft skills of having judgment, knowing how to respond, that's what matters. So companies have to train their people well."

A clear chain of crisis command is also critical, she said.

?I don't think most people have that. If something happens, who is the final arbiter? I tell clients, ?Mr. VP, I need your cell phone, and I may call you any night, any weekend,?? she said.

Armano uses a unique metaphor to help companies wrap their heads around the kinds of issues they'll face on Facebook and Twitter.? He compares social media hangouts to embassies and says companies should act like respectful foreign diplomats on embassy soil.

"These are like social embassies. They are like a piece of land in another country; maybe you control the grounds, but what happens just outside the embassy you have no control over," he said, adding that ??trying to control the discussion or the protests there is "just not worth it."

Brokerage weighing offers for Marbury Plaza debt

CBRE Group Inc. is weighing offers to buy $48.7 million in debt on the Marbury Plaza apartments in Southeast D.C. that could result in the community's sale to new owners.

Brokers at CBRE Group Inc. are weighing proposals to sell the debt on the controversial Marbury Plaza apartments in Southeast D.C. in a deal that could trigger the 671-unit rental community?s sale to new owners.

The brokerage had set a July 16 deadline to receive offers for the $48.7 million in debt on the property, which is broken down into three different notes and is in default, according to marketing materials.

With the debt in default, a new owner could seek to foreclose on, and sell the residential community on Good Hope Road. The apartment community was more than 90 percent occupied as of April 27, with an average monthly rental rate per unit of $1,163.

Representatives from CBRE declined to comment on the sale process. The brokerage has posted a brochure of the debt sale on its website.

The residential community, which includes high-rise and garden-style apartments, made headline news in 2005 when a woman and her child where killed in a laundry room explosion that sparked a much larger debate between the property?s tenants? and building manager. The tenants there went on strike in a move that lasted two years and led to the owners bringing on a new management company under a deal brokered by the D.C. attorney general?s office.

Thomas Beatie: Dating Amber Nicholas, Hoping for Fourth Child

Thomas Beatie is hoping to support the pregnant woman this time around.

The 38-year old - who first made headlines in 2007 after undergoing transgender surgery, yet preserving the organs needed to give birth - split from his wife in April of this year and is now dating someone named Amber Nicholas.

And he tells The Sunday Mirror that he wants to have another child, with one major catch:

Thomas Beatie Pregnant Picture

"Being pregnant is the most incredible experience," Beatie says to the newspaper. "But we want Amber to do it this time around. I think it would be amazing to experience pregnancy as the father."

While married to ex-wife Nancy, Thomas gave birth to three children. And he's not against trying for another, even if it means defying doctor's orders.

“My surgeon has advised against me getting pregnant because it would be a lot harder now I’m biologically a man," Beatie says, adding that he would need to go with a caesarian delivery "but I’d willingly do it to have another bundle of joy" if that's how Amber prefers it.

Single Boomers Put Dating on Hold to Care for Aging Parents ...

Posted on 02. Sep, 2012 by in Romantic

Seattle, Wash. (PRWEB) June 26, 2012

Since Robert moved to Florida to care for his aging mother, dating hasn?t been part of his life. He doesn?t have the time or energy. The 53-year-old single computer consultant?s 87-year-old mother has dementia and difficultly walking. He assists her with daily needs in her apartment, takes her to doctor?s appointments, and manages her medications, finances and other details, all the while researching the ideal long-term solution for her care.

?At the end of each day, it?s late, I?m tired and I?m not thinking about trying to get out to meet people socially,? Robert says.

Robert is not alone. One in three baby boomers is unmarried, a significant increase from 30 years ago, when just one in five people between the ages of 43 and 65 was single. Meanwhile, their parents? generation is living longer: the number of Americans 85 and older has doubled in the past 20 years and half have Alzheimer?s disease or some other form of dementia.

?The demographic data and what we hear anecdotally tell us that many single baby boomers are spending a great amount of time on their parents? care and it?s a constant juggle between this and their work lives,? said Kelly Scott. She is the author of ?When Your Only Date is Mom,? a free new pamphlet on single boomer caregivers and dating, and vice president of Emeritus Senior Living. The pamphlet is available for free download at http://www.Emeritus.com/dating.

?What these single boomers end up sacrificing are dating and relationships. This can become isolating and unhealthy, because companionship, intimacy and sexuality are basic human needs that feed our souls,? Scott said.

Since they are unmarried, these baby boomers may find themselves assuming more caregiving duties than their brothers and sisters with spouses.

?Sometimes the married siblings will say, ?You don?t have a family, so you have more ability to handle this,?? Scott said. ?Perhaps the situation has never been discussed and the single person has simply taken on the responsibility because it seemed to make sense. This can cause friction in an already difficult situation.?

In addition, some aging parents might not encourage single boomers to seek out relationships. ?Parents may have the expectation their children will focus on them exclusively in return for the years they spent raising them,? Scott said. ?Adult children feel a desire and obligation to be there for their parents, and may experience guilt if they aren?t.?

However, not considering dating a priority has far-reaching negative consequences. ?Besides being central to us as human beings, intimate relationships enrich daily life and help us in handling stress, including the stress of caregiving,? said Scott.

Withdrawing from relationships can have a long-term impact, too. ?Caregiving can go on for years,? Scott said. ?Upon the parent passing away, it leaves an emotional void for the single person who has primarily been focusing on them. It can be very hard to know how to resume dating.?

Lack of interest in dating may also be a sign of caregiver depression. ?Other symptoms of depression may include involvement in dangerous practices, such as dependency on alcohol and tobacco, drug use, or casual sexual liaisons,? said Scott. ?If this begins to happen, caregivers should know that support and help are available to deal with the psycho-social aspects of caring for an aging parent. There are so many resources, including psychologists, counselors, pastors and support groups.?

But just as important: Making the effort to bring meaningful romantic intimacy back into their lives. ?We all have a responsibility as human beings to take care of ourselves,? Scott said. ?If your only focus is caring for your parents, you are denying important needs. And after talking with your parent about the issue, you may find he or she is very supportive of your desire for a relationship. Many people in the senior generation have had long, stable and successful marriages, and they want the same happiness for their children.?

Coca-Cola available but expensive in N. Korea: defectors

Coca-Cola has been available at private markets in North Korea for more than a decade even if the US soft drink maker has not opened business in the communist state, defectors from the North said Saturday.

A clip featuring Coke being served in what is said to be a pizza restaurant in Pyongyang recently attracted attention on video sharing site YouTube.

Customers were told what they were drinking was "Italian" Coke despite the unmistakable red and white brand, according to the video posted to YouTube last October.

Lee Suk-Yong, who defected to the South in 2006, said distributors in China began shipping Coke across the North Korean border in 2002 when the North dallied with partial capitalist-style market reform.

"You can buy Coke at every private market in large cities whenever you're ready to pay up, although it is highly expensive, compared to other countries," he told AFP.

Coca-Cola however first arrived in North Korea "in 1989 when the country hosted the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students in Pyongyang", Kim Sung-Min, a renowned defector from the North, told AFP.

"Foreign cigarettes such as Marlboro and Dunhill were also available at such shops," he said.

The carbonated soft drink at that time appeared only at special shops in Pyongyang where foreign goods are available to those who have access to foreign exchanges -- ruling elites and foreigners.

It was simply too expensive for ordinary people to taste it, he said.

A Coca-Cola spokesman told The Telegraph that it "does not currently do business in North Korea".

"Any products sold in the market have been purchased by unauthorised third parties and imported into the country from other markets where they were sold", he said.

"No representative of The Coca-Cola Company has been in discussions or explored opening up business in North Korea. Coca-Cola could only consider entering the market in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations governing US relations with North Korea," he added.

"We cannot enter the market at this time".
