Home Depot and Lowes Q4 2011 Earnings | ToolGuyd

Posted on February 27th, 2012 by Stuart

The other day we discussed how Sears lost $2.4 BILLION in Q4 2011. The fourth and final quarter of the fiscal year includes the winter holiday shopping season, and usually represents more than the proportional 25% of annual sales. If a retailer fails to turn a profit during the holiday shopping season, everyone takes notices.

So let?s see how Lowes and Home Depot fared?

As mentioned, Home Depot reported $16 billion in revenue and $774 million in profit. Lowes announced their Q4 results early this morning ? $11.6 billion in revenue and $322 in earnings.

Some analysts are saying that the warmer winter weather helped drive along home improvement and new construction projects. And as we?ve seen and been told repeatedly, many homeowners are looking towards the DIY route to same money on small-medium sized home improvement projects.

While Home Depot and Lowes did not report a breakdown of revenue by department, it is safe to assume that the holiday season contributed to a boost in tool sales.

According to market research stats from a couple of months back, Sears and their Craftsman brand were still leading the market with about a third of hand tool sales. Home Depot and Lowes both lag behind, with less than 30% market share combined. The reverse is true with power tools, with Sears lagging behind both.

Consumer confidence does not depend on quarterly reports or business metrics, but with some analysts questioning Sears? survivability, we might see a shift in market share as consumers look for tools with greater warranty and guarantee stability.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? The U.S. and its allies dismissed the Syrian regime's referendum on a new constitution Sunday as a "farce" meant to justify the bloody crackdown on dissent.

But voters in government strongholds suggested why some Syrians have not joined the uprising against President Bashar Assad: Loyalty, distrust of the opposition and fear his fall will ignite a civil war.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called the poll "a cynical ploy" and urged Syrians who still support Assad to turn against him. A "farce" and a "sham vote" was how German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle described it.

"It's a phony referendum and it is going to be used by Assad to justify what he's doing to other Syrian citizens," Clinton said in an interview with CBS News in Rabat, Morocco.

"The longer you support the regime's campaign of violence against your brothers and sisters, the more it will stain your honor," she added, addressing Assad supporters, especially the military. "If you refuse, however, to prop up the regime or take part in attacks ... your countrymen and women will hail you as heroes."

While casting his vote at the state broadcasting headquarters, Assad showed no signs of giving in on international demands to end his crackdown. And as he has done in the past, he tried to deflect blame in other directions. He said Syria was under a "media attack."

"They may be stronger on the airwaves but we are stronger on the ground, and we aspire to win both on the ground and on the airwaves," he said in footage broadcast on state TV.

The U.S. and its European and Arab allies met Friday at a major international conference on the Syrian crisis in Tunisia, trying to forge a unified strategy to push Assad from power. They began planning a civilian peacekeeping mission to deploy after the regime falls.

The new constitution allows ? at least in theory ? for the formation of competing political parties and limits the president to two seven-year terms. Such change was unthinkable a year ago. Syria has been ruled by the Baath party since it seized power in a coup in 1963 and the Assad family has ruled since Bashar's father Hafez took over in another coup in 1970.

Even as the regime hailed the referendum as a giant step toward reform, its military kept up a crackdown that has been focused for the past three weeks on the opposition stronghold city of Homs. The city, parts of which are controlled by rebels, has come under intense shelling and hundreds have died, including two Western journalists.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 18 civilians and 16 security personnel were killed Sunday, mostly in Homs. Another group, the Local Coordination Committees, said 45 people were killed nationwide, including 21 in Homs province.

The opposition called the referendum an empty gesture and boycotted voting, saying it will not ease the country's crisis. Supporters of the uprising say nothing short of Assad's ouster will end the bloodshed.

Activist groups estimate nearly 7,500 have died in 11 months of unrest.

Still the referendum demonstrated the support that Assad continues to enjoy among many Syrians and pointed to the difficulties of regime opponents ? both internal and external ? will face in trying to push him from power.

For the 41 years Assad's family has ruled Syria, it has used shrewd politics, a nearly omnipresent intelligence service and brute force to maintain power. Many of Syria's minorities ? Christians, Druse and Alawites, which include Assad ? count on the regime for protection on the understanding that they remain loyal. Many others have also benefited from regime ties.

These groups could be loath to see the regime fall, especially given how disorganized and unfamiliar those fighting Assad are. Regular state propaganda characterizing them and Islamist extremists and "armed gangs" also plays a role.

Even a successful vote ? results are expected Monday ? is unlikely to bring immediate change. Activists say too many people have died for them to accept anything less than Assad's ouster.

Legal expert Omran Zoubi, who helped draft the new document, said Assad's time in office so far doesn't count. That means he could serve two more terms after his current one ends 2014, keeping him in office until 2028.

In the capital Damascus, a regime stronghold where many in business and minority communities support Assad, many appeared eager to vote in what they considered a safe step toward reform.

"I'm here because I love my country," said housewife Fayzeh Fadel, wearing large sunglasses, jeans and high heels. She said she didn't want Syria to have a civil war like Libya or neighboring Iraq.

She and other voters spoke to foreign reporters who were accompanied by government minders.

"My biggest fear is civil war," said a woman named Lana at a pro-Assad demonstration downtown who declined to give her full name. "That's why we are standing by our president and Syrian institutions."

Nearby, hundreds of people waved Syrian flags and carried signs telling Assad: "We love you." Reflecting Assad's international allies, street peddlers sold flags for Russia, China and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Eleven months after protesters inspired by successful Arab Spring revolts in Tunisia and Egypt first took the streets, the real extent of Assad's support is unclear. Syria has no reliable polling, and authorities have restricted media work.

Most Damascus voters are likely regime supporters or people scared of unrest. Actual opponents probably stayed home.

The two main opposition groups, the Syrian National Council and the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, called for a boycott, and other groups declared a general strike that appears to have been observed in some places.

Fewer voters turned out in the Damascus neighborhoods of Rukneddine and Barzeh, where anti-government protesters have recently demonstrated.

About 20 percent of shops were closed in Barzeh, and one voter said he had come from another center where there was "pressure not to vote ... intimidation and calls for public disobedience." He did not give his name for fear of reprisal.

Videos posted online Sunday by activists ? their primary means of communicating with the outside world ? gave a very different view.

Some showed protests against the vote outside of Damascus and Aleppo. One video from the northern Idlib province showed hundreds of men chanting, "To hell with them and their constitution."

A lighter video from elsewhere in Idlib showed dozens of men filing through a fake polling station and dropping their ballots in a trash bin.

The videos could not be independently verified.

Other videos showed the continued violence, as security forces shelled dissident areas and clashed with armed rebels.

The central city of Homs saw some of the day's worst violence. One video showed men firing a rocket-propelled grenade at a tank. Another from the neighborhood of Baba Amr, which has been subject to a weekslong government siege, showed huge plumes of smoke clouding the horizon while exploding shells boomed.

"The world is watching as Baba Amr is being destroyed and it says nothing," a voice says.

Phone Sex In Distant Relationships: Considering The Health ...

In this 21st century, nothing seems beyond the imagination or reach of man. Technology has made its impact in every facet of human endeavor; even is love affairs and relationships. These days, we have chairs specially designed for love making, toys and other gadgets too numerous to mention here.

In this era, the issue of sex has been so abuse and derogated that it seems not to have meaning anymore. Sex could be bought these days with nothing more than a 1 cent candy. This is not only happening in my neighborhood but everywhere in the world.

One form of innovation in the area of lovemaking is phone sex. Phone sex is becoming a craze all over the world; especially among youth. If you were to play a record of the phone sex of 20 youths, your ears will tinkle with so many lascivious words and thoughts that you would want to see a reverend for some prayers. Phone sex is when the actual act of love making is done over the phone or wireless; the person is not there physically but the act is been carried out with distance not been a barrier. That?s the power of technology. Some persons have even taken it up and are making good money from it.

But wait! Does phone sex have any health implications? Is phone sex good for your health; whether in the long or in the short run? This is what we will treat in this article. We will look at how phone sex affects your general wellbeing; especially as regard those who are involved in distant relationships or love affairs.

Health Issues Concerning Phone Sex

Phone sex is usually practiced between lovers as a result of distance been a barrier. I should say that it does have its advantages and disadvantages when it concerns your health.

Agreed, phone sex could be really fun and cool and serve a lot of good purposes. It has the possibility of creating that bond between the two persons involved; distance notwithstanding. It also has a really effect that comes from fulfillment. All this can give you that extra zest you need for the day; like some kind of tonic.

Phone sex also relieves strain; giving you that relaxing effect that is so hard to get this days with the crazy things happening all around us. It also takes your relationship to a higher level; bringing you both closer than never before. These advantages cannot be ignored when it comes to phone sex.

However, one cannot ignore the negative effect that it could also have on the couples especially health wise. For one, it could lead to an addiction that would be difficult to stop. The individual thus loses the taste for lovemaking with the partner or opposite sex and resort to self-stimulation. It could also result to wanton sex habit as the partner would want to carry out the real act after been psyched up with the phone sex. It could also lead to distrust from your partner who would believe; perhaps wrongly that you would want sexual gratification after the phone stuff as he / she is not available.

Before indulging in phone sex, you have to consider all the pros and cons; both to your health and relationship. Is it worth it? I leave the answer to you.

I manage the website http://www.sharpedgeforum.com where I attend to some issues relating to the seminars I organize for my clients. Though an Engineer and biz man, I take joy in writing; with several books published and articles on a variety of topics.

In legislatures and courtrooms, busy weeks ahead for voter ID

By Tom Curry, msnbc.com National Affairs Writer

In an election year dominated by battles over health care mandates, tax rates, and rising gasoline prices, it?s the mechanics of voting ? and who?ll get to vote in November ? that?s getting full-time attention from state legislators, election lawyers, and judges.

In the latest example, the Virginia state Senate is headed for a vote Friday on a new voter identification requirement ? one more indication that the voter ID controversy will keep boiling in legislatures and in the courts right up to Election Day.

These new voter ID laws are being proposed almost exclusively by Republican legislators and governors in states throughout the nation, spawning both litigation and angry rhetoric from Democrats.

?All of a sudden after the 2008 election, these (voter ID laws) miraculously appear,? said Rep. Frederica Wilson, D- Fla. at a recent anti-voter ID event at the Capitol. ?Why? Because we have a black president in the White House and it is to stop all of the people of color from ? coming out to vote, because they (the proponents of voter ID laws) know who they are targeting ?"

Here?s the status of some recently enacted voter ID laws and states where such laws might be considered this year:

Enacted but blocked
South Carolina: Last December, the Justice Department denied approval of the state?s voter ID law requiring voters to present photo identification that Gov. Nikki Haley had signed in May. Under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, South Carolina is one of nine states that must seek approval, or ?pre-clearance,? from the Justice Department or a federal court in Washington, D.C., in order to make any change in voting procedure.

State Attorney General Alan Wilson brought suit in federal court, arguing that the requirements ?are at most a temporary inconvenience? to some voters. The state contended that its law was nearly identical to one enacted by Indiana and upheld by the Supreme Court in 2008. Therefore barring South Carolina from doing what Indiana had done would ?raise serious constitutional concerns? about whether Section 5 ?violates South Carolina?s right to equal sovereignty.?

In a separate but related case with big implications for voter ID laws, Shelby County, Ala., is fighting in the federal appeals court in Washington to have Section 5 of VRA struck down as unconstitutional. The appeals court heard oral arguments on Jan. 19 and a ruling is likely in the next several weeks. ?The Shelby County case will likely end up before the Supreme Court and if the justices were to strike down Section 5, the Justice Department would no longer be able to pre-emptively block changes in voting laws.? The department would still be able to use another Section of the VRA to challenge voting laws that have a racially discriminatory impact.

Enacted but likely to be blocked
Texas: State Attorney General Greg Abbott filed a suit last month in federal court, asking that Texas be permitted this year to use the photo ID law Gov. Rick Perry signed last spring.

Under Section 5 of the VRA, the Justice Department is now considering Texas?s law, having asked for additional information from the state on the race and ethnicity of Texas voters and drivers. The department must give its response to the Texas law by March 12.

In his filing, Abbott said Texas did not have the racial and ethnic data the Justice Department wanted. ?Indeed, the very reason Texas refuses to maintain racial and ethnic data on its list of registered voters is to facilitate a colorblind electoral process,? he said.

Even in the unlikely event the Justice Department were to approve the Texas law, opponents of the law contend that say there would be problems implementing it.

?The state is not ready to allow citizens the ability to obtain this kind of voter ID,? said Rep. Charlie Gonzales, D- Texas. ?It goes way beyond just going to the Department of Public Safety and standing in line. You still have to have your birth certificate; if you?re divorced and your name is different you have to get a certified copy of your divorce decree. There are so many hoops to jump through.?

Enacted but may be blocked
Laws similar to those in South Carolina and Texas have passed in several states and are likely to be opposed by the Justice Department over the same concerns.

Alabama:? Another Section 5 state, Alabama passed a voter ID law which doesn?t take effect until 2014.

Mississippi:? Voters last November approved a ballot initiative to create a photo ID requirement. But the legislature must provide funding to implement the law and the state must receive Justice Department approval since Mississippi is a Section 5 state.

Wisconsin: On Tuesday Wisconsin conducted its first elections under the voter ID law that Republican Gov. Scott Walker signed last year.? Wisconsin is not covered by Section 5 of the VRA but challenges have already been launched. On Thursday civil rights groups and a labor union coalition filed a suit against the law arguing that it discriminates against black and Latino voters. The American Civil Liberties Union has also filed a suit seeking to block enforcement of the law. One argument ACLU makes is that the cost of obtaining a copy of a birth certificate ($20 in Wisconsin, more in other states) in order to get a state ID card would be ?a severe financial burden? for some people, a burden that violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The voting in municipal and county primary elections in Wisconsin went smoothly, according to the Associated Press. Walker commented on his Twitter account: ?1st election w/photo ID required & it seems to have run well. Proof that common sense still works.?

But Rep. Gwen Moore, D- Wisc., a longtime political foe of Walker, alleges the governor "clearly has had a goal?for many,?many years to?disenfranchise people of color."

She also contended that the law would hurt President Barack Obama?s chances to win the state in November, adding, ?This is strictly designed to disenfranchise people who would otherwise vote for Democrats."

Asked to comment on Moore?s remarks, Walker?s spokesman Cullen Werwie said, ?Requiring photo identification to vote is common sense ? we require it to get a library card, cold medicine, and public assistance.? Gov. Walker will continue to implement common sense reforms that protect the electoral process and increases citizens? confidence in the results of our elections.??

May be enacted this year
Virginia:? The state Senate is likely to vote Friday on a bill that would require a voter to present some form of identification but would allow him or her to use an employee identification card containing a photograph of the voter, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck that shows the name and address of the voter. As a VRA Section 5-covered state, Virginia would need to gets its law cleared by the Justice Department.

Pennsylvania:? The Pennsylvania House passed a voter ID bill last year. Both Republican and Democratic sources say that there will be a renewed push for voter ID to pass in the state Senate, where the GOP has a 30 to 20 majority, and to be sent on to Republican Gov. Tom Corbett for his signature in the next couple of months. Corbett has said he supports a voter ID law.

Minnesota: A Minnesota state senate committee has approved a proposed amendment to the state constitution to require photo ID for voting, but it has yet to be approved by the full state senate and the state House. Last year, Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat, vetoed a voter ID bill which had been passed by the Republican-majority state legislature.?

Missouri: On the November ballot is a proposed amendment to the state constitution which would allow for the legislature to impose a photo ID requirement. Republican state Sen. Bill Stouffer, the sponsor of that measure, predicts it will pass with 75 percent or more of the vote. The legislature last year passed a photo ID bill which Democratic Gov.? Jay Nixon vetoed.

Recently enacted
Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Kansas all enacted photo ID laws last year. None has yet been enjoined or struck down.? None of those states are covered by Section 5 of the VRA.

Not likely to be enacted this year
Iowa: The state?s Republican Secretary of State Matt Schultz has proposed a photo identification law but state Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal opposes the idea.

Ohio: The Ohio House passed a photo ID bill last year but the Senate didn?t act on it. The prospects do not look good for passing a bill this year, said Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted, a Republican.

He said the photo ID bill last year ?polarized people over the whole concept of election reform and modernization. The photo ID bill was much more ?nuclear,?? he said, than another bill, which he supported, to shorten and standardize the early voting period in every country in the state.? ?Once it (the photo ID bill) came on the scene, the common-sense conversations stopped and ? it was really hard to build consensus around thoughtful reforms,? Husted said.?

Squabbling 'Survivors' get Probst smackdown

CBS

"Survivor: One World's" Colton has managed to alienate himself from both teams of castaways.

By Drusilla Moorhouse, E! Online

Is anything worse than being slapped by Jeff Probst?

By the looks of the miserable tribe gathered at "Survivor: One World's" second Tribal Council tonight, the answer is definitely no.

"You're off to one of the worst starts ever in this game because of (your) absolute and total dysfunction," scolded Jeff. "It's almost like I'm talking to sixth-graders." He almost seemed disappointed that he could only snuff one torch.

So which "witless" tribe was on the receiving end of the Probst smackdown?

LAST WEEK'S RECAP: Chivalry is dead, y'All

Let's just say the ladies weren't getting any special treatment tonight.

After losing both the Reward and Immunity Challenges, the women's Salani tribe made their second trip to Tribal Council for a slapping by Jeff Probst before sending Nina home by a nearly unanimous vote. Although Nina described herself as energetic, Alicia compared her to a "bag of rocks" ("I don't even know what that analogy means, but she's just not moving") and Sabrina said the older woman was like "the walking dead." In comparison, the tribe likes Kat's youthful spirit, but Sab warned her, "At the end of the day, logic and strategy trumps rah-rah."

RELATED: "Amazing Race" producer's death in Uganda: Police discount poison theory, suspect drug overdose

Witless Protection Program: Even though Chelsea and Kim agreed with Nina that Kat's immaturity and clownish mistakes in the Immunity Challenge "embarrassed" their "witless" tribe -- "Kat makes us all out to be f------- idiots," said Chelsea -- they stuck to their alliance and saved the tribe's young'un. Salani leader Sabrina faces a tough challenge ahead to get some "girl power going on" in her tribe.

Do Blondes Have More Dumb? Nina didn't go down without a fight, calling Kat out during the challenge as "dumb as a rock" (for, among many other blunders, jumping into the water twice when she didn't have to) and, later, a dumb blonde, a dumb broad, and an ignorant nitwit ruining their tribe. But while Kat is asking what "ambiance" means, we have more pressing questions: Where is she getting her eyeliner? And why does she sit like a gangsta?

MORE: Former "Survivor" producer accused of killing wife extradited to Mexico

Reward Challenge: The women also lost the (first-ever?) do-it-yourself Reward Challenge at camp. (How wonderful it is to have two separate challenges now that the Redemption Island nightmare is over.) To win a coveted tarp, the tribes had to untie a bunch of knotted robes. The women seemed to be working well together, but the men (with Tarzan's magic "jazz fingers") finished seconds ahead. "We needed a tarp like a fat kid needs cake," quipped Sabrina. (Colton needs to step up his game if he wants to get more sound bites than Sab.)

No Man Is an Island: Does Colton have any desire to win a million bucks? By dodging work and his own tribe and tearfully begging the women to embrace him, he's alienated himself from all the Castaways. Even after Salani kicked him out, he "snaked" his way back. "Colton is like a virus," protested Sabrina. "There seems to be not a cure for him just yet."

Alliance of Misfit Boys: Colton does have a remedy -- the Hidden Immunity Idol that Sabrina herself gave him -- and finally made a move to use it to his advantage. Colton secretly revealed the Idol to tribe entertainer Tarzan, Leif, Jonas and Troyzan, whose first question -- "Who gave you the Idol?" -- shows how little faith the men have in Colton's abilities. (Except maybe Jonas, who calls the "ridiculously smart" kid a "freak of nature.") Instead of targeting Colton, the new alliance agree "get rid of the muscle" -- Mike and Matt -- when (if?) they go to Tribal Council. "Until I can get with the girls, I have to associate myself with these misfits," Colton preens. "They can call themselves the Misfit Alliance, I'll just be their king. They should have called this 'Survivor: Colton's World.'"

PECS VS. BIKINIS! Take a closer look at the "One World" castaways

Next Time, on "Survivor": Without a tarp, the women are soaked and freezing in their makeshift shelter, but they receive no help from the men -- even Colton: "I'm a Republican," he says. "I do not believe in handouts." Meow! ?

Can the women recover from their fatal mistakes? Are you a fan of Colton or do you want to see him silenced? And what's the deal with Kat's eyeliner? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Suleika Jaouad: 10 Ways to Help a Friend With Cancer

If it takes a village to raise a child, you might say it also takes one to care for the sick. Cancer is at once personal and communal. Disease lives in the sufferer's body, but the experience of illness is shared, often intimately, by our loved ones. And yet, caring for the sick can feel like writing a travelogue about a country you've never visited. You can't know where you haven't been.

"What can I do to help?"

This is the sincere, often reflexive, response people have when they find out I have cancer. When I was diagnosed with leukemia last May at the age of 22, my boyfriend, Seamus, sprung into action as my CCO: chief caregiving officer, after my parents. As the news of my diagnosis spread, my friends, acquaintances -- and even some strangers -- formed a loving support network. It was a comforting reminder of how selfless people can be.

But while most of my friends and family would help me in a heartbeat, knowing how to help can be a daunting, even paralyzing, challenge. Over the past eight months, through seven hospitalizations and six rounds of chemotherapy, Seamus and I have sustained a running dialogue about what it means to be a caregiver and a care recipient; what it means to be in love with one another while my body's at war with itself.

This guide to helping a friend with cancer is built from parts of our many conversations on the subject of caregiving.

  1. Say "I don't know what to say" -- A cancer diagnosis can paralyze the lines of communication between friends. Some people freeze up and don't say anything at all, while others dwell on finding the "perfect" words. If you're at a loss for words, say so. If you have a lot to say but don't know where to start, say that, too. Honesty rules. I've never felt offended by someone who doesn't know what to say, but I've felt hurt by those who don't call or write at all. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
  2. Be an equal opportunity listener -- Cancer is a gloomy subject -- there's no pretending otherwise. While your instinct can be to immediately steer the conversation toward the cheerful, it's vital for a cancer patient to feel comfortable venting feelings of fear, sadness, anger, loss, and isolation. One of the most important things you can do as a friend is to make it clear that you are willing to listen to both the good and the bad.
  3. Assess the specifics -- Cancer patients are often too tired or too polite to respond to the broad question of "How can I help?" Take the lead and ask specific questions. Without being pushy, you'll find areas where you can step in: Who is going to look after them during the day? Can they prepare their own meals? What about transportation? Are there other people close to the person with cancer who also need support?
  4. Do what you do best -- Do what comes from the heart and follow through. Please remember that the patient doesn't expect you to compose a song if you don't play an instrument. Lending a hand is easier when you play your strengths. If you love to cook, drop off a homemade dish; if you're an artist, make something to hang on the hospital room wall; and if you're an organizer, offer to gather research or to take notes during medical appointments.
  5. Take care of yourself -- You hear it a lot: Caregivers must take good care of themselves, too. No matter how upset or stressed out you are about your friend's illness, it is critical to be selfish about your own health. Nutrition is important, especially because bad "comfort foods" beckon in times of stress. Regular exercise, even walking, is crucial for the body as well as the mind: Some of the best thinking happens when your body is in motion. Perhaps most important of all is getting enough sleep. Love does, in fact, have boundaries. You must take care of yourself to be the best ally to your friend.
  6. "No need to write me back" -- Since my diagnosis, I've been showered with the warmth of letters, emails and cards of support. These messages, filled with love and positive energy, are my daily reminders that I'm not alone in this struggle. But finding the energy to write back can feel like a herculean task. You may be able to dissolve any potential stress for the patient by reminding him or her that there's no need to respond or write a thank-you note.
  7. Distraction is a godsend -- While you should be careful joking about cancer (everybody's sensitivity differs), some juicy gossip, a funny joke, or a good movie can go a long way in lifting someone's spirits. Humor may feel out of place next to IV bags and bedpans, but it can be an essential counterweight to the gravity and absurdity of cancer. Don't feel like you can't be the bearer of good news. Bring magazines, music, stories and sunshine.
  8. Get involved in the cause -- As someone who will be receiving a bone marrow transplant this spring, I am deeply moved by my friends who have signed up to become bone marrow donors or taken time to learn about my disease. Join the bone marrow registry, give blood, organize a fundraiser, or donate a sum (however small) to cancer research or an organization of your choice. It's a gesture acknowledging that cancer affects communities of strangers as well as the people you know.
  9. "It's time for me to go" -- Long visits don't necessarily mean better ones. Visits needn't be rushed, but please keep in mind that the sick person doesn't have the same energy level as you do. Be attentive to signs that the patient needs to rest.
  10. "I love you" -- If there's ever a time to tell a friend or family member how much you care about them, this is it.
  11. Our dialogue is always continuing. What are your tips for helping loved ones who are ill?

Expression of Receptor Tyrosine Kinase RON in Colorectal Cancer ...

posted by:

Cancer Research

[Abstract]

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant cancers. In the Western countries, the mobility and mortality of the colorectal cancer have got the first place among the digestive tract?s malignant tumors. About 30%-40% post-operated patients died for recurrence or metastasis. Though significant progresses have been made with surgery, adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the five-year survival rate remained fairly static over past 30 years.Recently, people found RON(recepteur d?origine nantais), a member of the MET oncogene family, has the ability of mediating epithelial cell dissociation, migration and inhibiting apoptosis, suggesting that RON might be involved in the progression and metastasis of epithelial cancers in vivo. Studies showed that RON is over-expressed in human colorectal cancer and breast cancer. But the relationship between the RON expression and clinical pathology stages remains unclear. Here, we used immunohistochemical analysis to detect the intensity of RON expression in the colorectal cancer specimens, then made a 3-year follow-up. And we analyses the relationship between the RON expression and clinical pathologic stages and prognosis.Materials and methodsMaterial Radical resection specimens of colorectal cancer;RON antibody (Rabbit anti human);Immunohistochemical S-P kit;HPIAS-100 colorized pathologic analytical system;Other experiment apparatus. Methods1) We treated all the specimens with formalin fixation, paraffin imbedding and made 4v m serial section, then we had the immunohistochemical staining.2) We first recorded the gray scale of the cancer tissue by HPIAS-100 colorized pathological analytical system.3) Then we analyses the relation between the RON expression and the Duke?s stages.4) In addition, we kept a 3-year follow-up for the internalized patients, and accounted the 3-year survival rate. In the experiment, we used Kaplain-Meier model and log-rank test in univariate analysis.Results1) RON expression in the colorectal specimens: RON expression was observed in normal colorectal epithelium, colorectal adenoma and cancer, and the intensity of RON expression in tumor was much higher than in normal epithelium, suggesting that RON played an important role in tumorigenesis.2) RON expression in colorectal cancer: RON expression becajne enhanced when the clinical pathologic stages elevated, and RON over-expression was correlated with aggressive tumor characteristics, such as invasive depth and lymph nodes metastasis. Suggesting that RON might influence many steps in tumor progression and metastasis.3) RON expression and prognosis: The overall survival time were (31.5 ?2.2) months, and the disease-free survival time were (27.5+2.2) months. The overall 3-year survival rate was 77.21%, the disease-free 3-year survival rate was 76.05%. The significant factors in Kaplain-Meier analysis were Duke?s stages and lymph node metastasis. But RON expression didn?t have any effect on the post-operative life span.Conclusion1) All colorectal tissues expressed RON, and the intensity of RON expression in colorectal tumor was much higher than in normal epithelium.2) RON expression becomes enhanced when the Duke?s stages elevated.3) RON expression had close relation with tumor progression and metastasis4) RON expression didn?t have effect on the post-operative life span.

Paraguay: Stray dog's barking foils prison break

(AP) ? A stray dog is getting credit for thwarting a prison break in Paraguay.

Officials say three dangerous inmates dug a tunnel about 26 feet (eight meters) from their cell to the street, and were about to break free just before dawn when the dog began to bark and alerted a guard.

Authorities at the Tacumbu prison on the southern edge of the capital dragged the unlucky prisoners before the media on Friday to tell the tale.

"Because of a stray dog we couldn't escape," complained Hilario Villalba. "When I reached the street, sticking my head out, the stupid dog barked and alerted a guard."

Villalba, who is serving a 30-year double-murder sentence, vowed in his native Guarani language that he'll keep keep trying to escape because he said his sentence isn't fair.

Meanwhile in neighboring Argentina, a yellow labrador named Tiza alerted border guards to a motorist trying to smuggle $110,000 in $100 bills into Uruguay. The driver denied carrying any money, but the dog sniffed out the bills hidden in the glove compartment, another compartment and inside the rear seats, Argentina's tax collection agency announced Friday.

Estrogen and Its Receptors Impact on Liver Metastasis Cancer from ...

[Abstract]

Background Several papers have proposed that high incidence of metastatic liver carcinoma from colorectal carcinoma ,when diagnosed as CRC(Colorectal Cancer) , reached 20% to 40%, and metastatic liver cancer should response to the high mortality. A large scale case investigation indicated us that there were difference between the male and female in incidence of metastatic liver cancer, and the ratio of incidence between genders was 1.9:1. There were also some documents reported postmenopausal women would decrease the risk for CRC if intaked some certain dose estrogen, but if CRC women kept on intaking estrogen, it would lead to CRC up-staged and increase the possibility of metastasis. Because of the introduction of new subtype estrogen receptor?ER?, people recognized ER?as the overwhelming abundant ER in CRC tissue gradually. ER?correlated with cell proliferation and expression of adhering molecule, and high ER?expression inhibited the cell proliferation and increased adhering molecule level, such as?-catenin. Taken together, we thought estrogen and ER may correlated with CRC metastatic liver cancer. Objective We assay the ER?expression status in metastatic liver cancer tissues, and serum estrogen level in metastatic liver cancer patients in order to evaluate whether E/ER are the impact factors of CRC metastatic liver cancer.Method Immunohistochemical stainning with antibody to ER?and ER?was perform on histologic sections, whose samples derived from metastatic liver cancer, colorectal cancer mucous, normal mucous distant from cancer tissue and prepared from paraffin block. We use E2 RIA Kit to test metastatic liver cancer

U.N. urges Iraq to move Iranian dissidents to new camp (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Iraq on Wednesday to speed up the transfer of Iranian dissidents at a camp near Baghdad to a temporary facility that the dissident group has compared to a prison.

Camp Ashraf, 40 miles from Baghdad, has been home for 25 years to the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran, or PMOI, an Iranian opposition group the United States and Iran officially consider a terrorist organization.

The current Iraqi government has never concealed its desire get rid of the camp. Under pressure from the United Nations and European Union, Baghdad extended its deadline to close Ashraf late last year from December 31, 2011 to April 30, 2012.

But Ban is now urging Iraq and the PMOI to work together to begin moving Ashraf residents immediately because, as U.N. officials told Reuters, the United Nations is afraid that violence could erupt if the relocation does not begin soon.

"The Secretary-General believes that the time has come to start the relocation process without further delay," Ban's press office said in a statement. "He urges the Iraqi authorities and the residents of Camp Ashraf to continue to cooperate and complete the process in a peaceful manner."

The statement said the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has "confirmed that the infrastructure and facilities at the temporary transit location are in accordance with ... international humanitarian standards."

It was not immediately clear how the Iranians at Camp Ashraf reacted to Ban's call to accelerate their move out of the camp.

Earlier this month a spokesman for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the PMOI's political wing, dismissed suggestions from U.N. special envoy to Iraq Martin Kobler that conditions at the new facility - Camp Liberty - were acceptable.

The spokesman, Shahin Gobadi, said in an email the new facility would have "prison conditions," with residents denied the freedom to come and go and without access to lawyers and medical services.

Camp residents will also be banned from taking vehicles and other property with them, apart from "individual belongings," and will only be able to contact U.N. officials by telephone, Gobadi said.

NEW CONDITIONS

In an article in Wednesday's New York Times, however, Kobler said the new camp would have medical facilities and would be monitored around the clock by U.N. observers. Residents would be interviewed by the U.N. refugee agency to determine their eligibility to resettle as refugees outside Iraq, he added.

Camp Ashraf continued to operate after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. But its future became unclear after Washington turned it over to Iraq in 2009. Baghdad has repeatedly said it does not want the guerrilla group on Iraqi soil.

Kobler said Camp Ashraf's leaders, after agreeing in principle to move out an initial group of 400 residents, had hesitated in recent days to do so, placing new conditions on the transfer to which the Iraqi government rejected.

"The government's patience is wearing thin, and further delay could lead to provocation and violence," he said. "Change is understandably unsettling for the residents, but maintaining the status quo is neither a safe nor viable option."

In the 1970s, the PMOI led a guerrilla campaign against the U.S.-backed shah of Iran but after the 1979 Islamic revolution turned against Iran's new clerical rulers. It was hosted in Iraq by former leader Saddam Hussein, a bitter foe of Iran.

Late last year, there were several rocket attacks on Camp Ashraf, which the NCRI blamed on the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps "and its Iraqi agents."

In April 2011, Ashraf was the scene of clashes between residents and Iraqi security forces, during which 34 people were killed, according to a U.N. investigation.
